ISU Students

CeMaST supports increasing opportunities for all students, especially those students who have a unique voice to bring to their career in STEM or STEM education disciplines.

CeMaST also holds a number of events for our student programs, including STEAM Socials hosted by the STEM Ambassadors. Check out our Redbird Life page for upcoming student events.

Programs

Science IS-U Scholars

The Science IS-U (pronounced "science is you") Scholars program is a community of STEM majors who are interested in marshaling their disciplinary expertise to pursue just, empathetic, and equitable solutions to societal problems. Science IS-U Scholars are curious and have a self-determination to pursue scientific discovery and lifelong learning. Scholars participate in Science IS-U's early arrival program, the co-sciences living/learning community in Hewett residence hall, and an all-expenses paid research internship. Scholars receive a $10,000/year housing credit for participation in the living/learning community (up to two years) and complete the general education course, IDS 119: The Civically Engaged Scientist, tuition-free.

  • STEM Ambassadors

The STEM Ambassadors were hired as first-year STEM majors. They conduct mentored research and support their peers in finding early success as STEM students. They have launched the ISU Answers student-to-student help platform, presented research on student–faculty connections to faculty at the University Teaching and Learning Symposium, and supported the School of Biological Sciences by capturing student perspectives on potential course revisions.

  • April Schermann STEM Scholarship

Funded by a gift from ISU alumna and local STEM teacher, the April Schermann STEM Scholarship provides a $1,500 scholarship to a sophomore, junior, or senior STEM major who demonstrates financial need and a sophisticated understanding of the importance of women's participation in STEM disciplines.

  • STEM Hub

The CeMaST STEM Hub is central to our STEM programming, which revolves around empowering, conducting, and supporting STEM education and scholarship in the community and on campus. We offer a variety of programming, which includes the following: professional development, STEM programming, STEM student community building, and maker-based programming and collaboration. The STEM Hub is home to various equipment, hand tools, and materials and also serves as a workshop or activity space.

  • Innovation Consulting Community

College students are provided with a transformational learning experience guided by project mentors with the opportunity to further develop a creative mindset to propose solutions to complex problems and innovation in strategy.

  • STEM Extracurricular Opportunities

You don't have to be a STEM major to have fun with STEM! Physics-related activities include the solar car competition, astronomy club, and the trebuchet challenge. Biology-related clubs include BSSA (Biological Sciences Student Association) and the professional fraternity, Phi Sigma. And there is also Chem Club, Geology Club, and the numerous technology-related opportunities.
