Early Career Learning Community

CeMaST hosts the Early Career Learning Community (ECLC) that supports pre-tenure faculty in developing the skills to be a teacher-scholar at ISU. We explore high-impact teaching practices and building the skills for assembling competitive funding proposals to the National Science Foundation.

ECLC Activities

During the fall 2020 semester, the ECLC is meeting the second and fourth Wednesdays each month at 10am. We have a ReggieNet page where all materials are shared with participants and where we post videos of guest speakers. Guest speakers are invited based on community members' interest and needs. Topics include:

  • Conceptualizing one's research through the lenses of NSF's two merit review criteria, Broader Impacts and Intellectual Merit
  • Integrating high-impact educational practices, such as active-learning, community engagement, and undergraduate research, into your teaching
  • Problematizing one's research to demonstrate an urgent need for funding
  • Understanding the higher education landscape and how teacher-scholars can contribute to positive institutional change
  • NSF's 10 Big Ideas and how we can frame our research by them
  • Logistics of grant proposal submission and working with ISU's Research and Sponsored Programs office

Eligibility & How to Join

The ECLC is open to any pre-tenure faculty member whose research can be funded by any of NSF's Directorates. New faculty are encouraged to participate, even if they do not plan to submit any funding proposals during their first year. A mass invitation is sent to new faculty members at the beginning of each fall semester, although an interested faculty member can be added to our ReggieNet page at any time by simply completing the ECLC Interest Form.
