What is the Inclusive Excellence STEM Fellowship?

The Inclusive Excellence STEM Fellowship is a program funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute that supports STEM faculty in making the introductory STEM experience at ISU welcoming and supportive. The paid Fellowship is both an honor that recognizes commitment to broadening representation in STEM disciplines as well as support for faculty who wish to provide more equitable and inclusive instruction in courses that are foundational to one or more STEM degree program(s).

What activities do STEM Fellows participate in?

Inclusive Excellence STEM Fellows complete the following activities:

  • Fellows attend the 3-part professional development series led by Dr. Saundra McGuire or participate in a book club discussing Saundra McGuire's book in the Spring 2024 semester:
  • Then, during the summer of 2024, Fellows apply what they gathered from the above experiences to enhance equity and inclusion in their STEM course(s). This will involve one full-day meeting and two half-day meetings throughout the summer. Meetings will be in-person.
  • Fellows attend the Inclusive Excellence STEM Fellowship Reception in the fall of 2024, to which the Provost, AVP for Faculty Development, and STEM chairs/directors will be invited, and informally share reflections on their experience.
  • With assistance from CeMaST, Fellows will collect evaluative evidence measuring the impact of their teaching practices following the Fellowship, which can be used in Fellows’ tenure/promotion teaching portfolios to demonstrate teaching excellence.
  • Fellows will also have the option to travel to the Inclusive Excellence learning community’s annual meeting to meet with like-minded faculty at other institutions.

How much is the Inclusive Excellence STEM Fellowship award?

Fellows are paid $3,000 in the summer of 2024 for their participation.
