History of CeMaST

CeMaST was founded in 1991 to assist in integrating efforts of diverse departments, drawn from different colleges in the university, in meeting the needs of Illinois schools in addressing issues related to mathematics, science, and technology education. While individual departments had exemplary programs serving their individual disciplinary needs, there was no overarching structure for attempting to meet the needs of schools that wished to integrate.

Dr. Thomas Wallace, former president of Illinois State University, created CeMaST and appointed the first Directors of CeMaST: Dr. John Dossey, a distinguished professor of mathematics education; Dr. Tom Fitch, a professor of science education; and Dr. Franzie Loepp, a distinguished professor of technology education. The first major initiative of CeMaST was the development of the National Science Foundation funded Integrated Mathematics, Science, and Technology (IMaST) curriculum, which has become a part of a larger K-12 STEM Curriculum.

CeMaST Projects
